  5.      A new puppy will often whine because he misses his mother.
  6.      Wrap a towel around a warm hot water bottle and place it in his
  7.      bed. A ticking clock or a radio playing softly will also help.
  8.      
  9.      To help keep your puppy from chewing on the carpet and furniture,
  10.      be sure he has his own rubber toys.  On furniture (table, chair
  11.      legs, etc.) that he is chewing on, try putting a little oil of
  12.      cloves on the wood.  The odor should keep him away, if not, the
  13.      bitter taste will.
  14.       
  15.      For a new litter of puppies or kittens, confine them in a mesh
  16.      playpen.  With a wooden playpen with wooden slats, tape screen
  17.      around the pen so they won't get out.  Children's plastic pools
  18.      are great for new puppies.  The pool can be rinsed out to rid
  19.      odors or messes.
  20.      
  21.      To get your puppy's attention, put a few pennies in a empty soda
  22.      can and shake.  The noise will make him stop what he is doing. 
  23.      This can be a good training tool. 
  24.      
  25.      Housebreak your dog by hanging a bell by the back door.  When you
  26.      want to take your puppy outside, ring the bell.  As he gets older
  27.      he will ring the bell when he needs to go out.
  28.      
  29.      Don't leave cigarette butts in ash trays where a puppy can get to
  30.      them.  If eaten, cigarette butts can lead to nicotine poisoning.
  31.      
  32.      Always keep the toilet lid down if you use toilet bowl cleaners. 
  33.      They are often strongly alkaline and tempting for pets to drink.
  34.      
  35.      Keep your pets away from toxic plants.  Rhododendron, Japanese
  36.      yew, and lily of the valley, as well as peach and cherry pits,
  37.      can all cause problems if eaten.

  39.      Be certain automotive anti-freeze is kept out of reach and any
  40.      drippings are cleaned up completely.  Pets are attracted to its
  41.      scent.  Antifreeze is highly toxic.

  43.      Secure electrical cords to baseboards or make them inaccessible. 
  44.      If your pet chews on them, it can suffer electric shock burns and
  45.      may even die.  
  46.      
  47.      To hide cords that can't be made inaccessible, you can place
  48.      paper towel or toilet tissue cardboard rolls over cords.  Place
  49.      construction cardboard on walls over cords.
  50.      
  51.      Never give your pet chocolate.  This can be very toxic to your
  52.      pet.

  54.      Remove burrs from your pet's fur by working oil into the tangle
  55.      or by crushing the burrs with pliers.  You can comb out crushed
  56.      burrs as they lose their holding power.

  58.      When bathing your pet, place a rubber mat in the bottom of the
  59.      tub for a more secure footing for your pet.  It will feel safer
  60.      and be more relaxed.
  61.      
  62.      When washing your pet, a creme rinse is helpful for dogs that
  63.      have fur that tangles.
  64.      
  65.      To wash away strong odors and cut soap film, add vinegar or lemon
  66.      juice to the rinse water.
  67.      
  68.      Baking soda in the rinse water will leave your pet's coat odor
  69.      free, plus softer and shinier. 
  70.      
  71.      Place a tea strainer in the tub drain to keep pipes from clogging
  72.      up with your pet's hair.
  73.      
  74.      Dry clean your pet instead of washing, by rubbing baking soda
  75.      into his coat thoroughly and then brushing off.  This will
  76.      deodorize as well as clean.

  78.      Your dog's ears can be washed out with a vinegar and water
  79.      solution.  Mix equal amounts of water and vinegar in a small
  80.      bottle.  This is the same thing many vets use, except it doesn't
  81.      have any coloring.

  83.      If your pet has had a run in with a skunk, in a well ventilated
  84.      area, wash your pet in tomato juice.  Then wash with shampoo and
  85.      water.  Rinse with a gallon of water to which a few tablespoons
  86.      of ammonia have been added.  Thoroughly rinse your pet with clear
  87.      water.

  89.      If your puppy has an accident, blot up as much moisture as
  90.      possible.  Rub the spot with a solution of vinegar or lemon juice
  91.      and warm sudsy water.   Blot a few times, then pour straight club
  92.      soda over the spot and blot again.  Place a dry towel over the
  93.      stain and put a heavy object (like a book) on top of it.  Replace
  94.      towel if it becomes soggy and repeat blotting.
  95.      
  96.      For cat accidents, follow the same steps but, when the spot is
  97.      dry, rub with a cloth dampened in ammonia.  This will take the
  98.      offensive odor away and it will prevent the cat from ever going
  99.      in  that spot again.

  101.      Reflector tape on your pet's collar might help cut down on the
  102.      danger of its being struck by a car at night.
  103.      
  104.      To rid your pet's house of fleas, place pine needles in the house
  105.      or under his bedding.  Salt crevices of dog houses to keep fleas
  106.      out.

  108.      Wash your pet in salt water to kill the fleas on them.
  109.      
  110.      Brewer's yeast rubbed on your dog's coat prevents fleas.
  111.      
  112.      If you're going to use a flea collar on your pet, be sure to put
  113.      it on before flea season starts.

  115.      Vacuum floors and carpets often during flea season.  Put salt or
  116.      mothballs in vacuum bag to kill hatching fleas.

  118.      Your pet's dish will stay put while he is eating if placed on a
  119.      rubber mat.

  121.      To keep ants out of your pet dishes, place the food dish inside
  122.      of a pie pan of water.

  124.      Store large bags of pet food in clean plastic pails with lids. 
  125.      Keeps food fresh and easy to dish out.

  127.      To keep stray dogs from attacking your garbage, sprinkle full-
  128.      strength ammonia over the garbage bags before placing them in

  131.      If your dog stays outside in a dog house, make a flap for the
  132.      house entrance to keep the wind and rain out.  A rubber floor mat
  133.      or carpeting cut to size and slit up the middle makes nice flaps.

  135.      To keep cats off of tables, put strips of double faced tape on
  136.      them.  Cats will not like the feel of the sticky substance on
  137.      their paws.

  139.      Cats hates plastic so to keep your cat off your chairs, cover the
  140.      chair with plastic until he learns it's off limits.

  142.      A spray bottle of water will quickly train a cat not to do
  143.      something.

  145.      Cats love to hide in empty boxes or paper sacks.

  147.      Attach a string to a ping pong ball and hang it on a chair or
  148.      shelf to entertain your pet.

  150.      Crumble aluminum foil into a ball for your cat to bat around.

  152.      When your cat refuses to take liquid medicine, spill the medicine
  153.      on his fur.  He will lick himself clean and take medicine at the
  154.      same time.

  156.      Remove your pet's hair from your clothing by using masking tape. 
  157.      Roll tape out and attach the tape backwards on the roll so the
  158.      sticky side is out.  Roll the tape on your clothes and the hair
  159.      will stick to the tape.

  161.      To remove excessive hair from clothing, dampen a sponge and
  162.      briskly rub clothing.  Hair should ball up and you'll be able
  163.      pick off the hair balls.

  165.      If you plan to travel with your pet, start out with small trips
  166.      first before going on long trips.

  168.      Be sure to pack a pet's own food and water to avoid upsets on
  169.      trip.  Some animal's stomachs will become upset on food or water
  170.      that it is not familiar with.

  172.      Pets should be confined in carriers while traveling. Your pet
  173.      will be unable to leap from open doors or interfere with driving.

  175.      Dog harnesses are available that hook to car seats.

  177.      Sedatives from your veterinarian can be given to jittery pets for
  178.      unavoidable traveling.  Otherwise if your pet doesn't like
  179.      traveling it's better to leave him with a sitter.

  181.      Be sure to have identification on your pet while traveling.  Be
  182.      sure to include area code with telephone number.  Two collars are
  183.      good in case one falls off.

  185.      If you're a bird lover, help make their nesting easier by
  186.      providing building material.  Collect bits of string, yarn, hair
  187.      from your brush, lint from dryer.  Fasten together lightly and
  188.      attach to a tree branch.

  190.      In winter, treat birds to a pine treat by covering pine cones
  191.      with hardened bacon grease (or other  fat) and roll in bread
  192.      crumbs or bird seeds.

  194.      Pine cones can also be coated with peanut butter and rolled in
  195.      sunflower seeds.

  197.      Don't forget the hint from the kitchen section.  The one that you
  198.      use for cooking grease and birdseed.

  200.      To attract birds to an outdoor birdbath, drop a few colored
  201.      marbles into the water.

  203.      If you have a indoor bird for a pet and it gets loose in the
  204.      house try this:  Close the drapes and turn off the lights.

  206.      to catch it easier.
